Vanessa Kirby emphasizes the importance of superhero narratives—not solely for their fantastical abilities, but for their representation of human experiences. In the upcoming film, Fantastic Four: First Steps, she takes on the role of Sue Storm, known as the Invisible Woman. This project features a star-studded cast including Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach and showcases a retro-futuristic design that revitalizes Marvel’s original family.

“Sue embodies positivity,” Kirby remarks. “She represents more than just a powerful hero; she copes with challenges involving Reed and feels exasperated by her brother while attempting to keep everything in order. That complexity truly fascinated me.”

The portrayal held a personal significance for Kirby as Sue Storm is depicted as pregnant, mirroring her own journey toward motherhood with partner Paul Rabil. “It feels surreal,” she admits. “I gleaned invaluable insights from Sue without fully acknowledging it. Many women I know harbor concerns about balancing work and motherhood. I had my anxieties too. Yet, that’s an outdated perspective on women’s roles. It’s astounding what we can achieve.”

Amid the physical challenges of shooting Fantastic Four and Avengers: Doomsday during her pregnancy, Kirby appreciated the support she received from her team. She credits stylist Andrew Mukamal for customizing her wardrobe and lauds her Marvel colleagues for their kindness on set.

Throughout her career, Kirby has consistently embraced vulnerability, whether portraying Princess Margaret in The Crown, Josephine in Napoleon, or delivering her heart-wrenching Oscar-nominated performance in Pieces of a Woman. “I’ve been fortunate to have deeply rewarding creative experiences,” she notes. “When the material is intense, you must immerse yourself in it for a time.”

Away from the camera, Kirby stays grounded by engaging with War Child and volunteering in refugee camps. “Countless individuals carry out far more significant work than we do,” she reflects. “Our jobs may be visible, but it’s essential to appreciate it for what it is and remain thankful.”

As she juggles launching her production firm, Aluna Entertainment, and preparing for her new role as a mother, she expresses enthusiasm for the release of Fantastic Four. “Filming was a fantastic experience,” she states. “I can’t wait for everyone to see it.”

Fantastic Four: First Steps is set to premiere in theaters on July 25.
