Dakota Fanning has clarified a common misconception: there is no sibling rivalry between her and Elle Fanning. In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, the 31-year-old actress stated that she and her younger sister, 27, have always pursued their individual careers in the entertainment industry.
“Not at all. While we share a lot in common, we are quite distinct,” Dakota expressed, dismissing the notion that their respective careers have ever been at odds. “I don’t view a role that’s suitable for her as something that would suit me. I don’t feel any competitiveness. However, I understand that some may find that hard to believe.”
The sisters have been prominent figures in the public eye since they were young—Dakota making her debut in I Am Sam at the age of seven, while Elle took on the role of her younger self in the same movie. Over the years, their careers have taken different trajectories, with Dakota engaging in both independent films and larger studio projects, while Elle has gained recognition as a fashion and red carpet icon.
Now, over two decades later, the sisters are set to collaborate on the film The Nightingale, based on Kristin Hannah’s acclaimed novel, which is anticipated for release in 2027. For Elle, the experience of working alongside her older sister feels seamless: “As kids, we aimed to give each other the freedom to pursue our own journeys. But now that we’re adults, it’s so rewarding to come together.”
The conversation also highlighted their close relationship off-screen, from sharing career insights to fashion advice. Whether they’re walking the red carpet or featured in photo shoots, the Fanning sisters consistently showcase themselves as one of Hollywood’s most supportive sibling pairs.
