In a groundbreaking decision marking a transformative chapter for British Vogue, Chioma Nnadi, the newly appointed head of editorial content, selected singer FKA Twigs to feature on her inaugural cover, donning the now-famous lemon yellow Loewe gown. This particular dress gained viral notoriety when Aubrey Plaza wore it to the Emmys, leading to a flurry of memes and various humorous comparisons due to its unique square-shaped bodice, likening it to everything from a Post-it note to a Kraft cheese slice.

The April issue of British Vogue not only highlights this eye-catching dress but also signifies a notable shift in the magazine’s editorial direction, as Nnadi takes over after Edward Enninful. Returning to London after two decades in New York, where she acquired substantial experience as editor of Vogue.com, Nnadi’s return is both personally and professionally meaningful. In her editor’s letter, she reflects on the city’s vibrant and unchanging energy, emphasizing London’s reputation for creativity and resilience.

For Nnadi, selecting FKA Twigs as the cover star was an easy choice. Twigs represents the quintessential modern British eccentric, embracing individuality and exuding a passion for fashion. The photoshoot, which took place in iconic British locales, reinforces Twigs’ ties to her heritage, as she poses dynamically in a red telephone box and on top of a classic London cab, framed by the city’s architectural marvels.

Social media users noted the dress’s resemblance to a post-it note, leading to various parodies, including references to a popular Sex and the City episode (left)

Beyond her striking fashion presence, Twigs has also taken center stage in issues of artistic expression and freedom. Recently, her involvement in a Calvin Klein advertisement sparked debate, being labeled as overly sexualized by the Advertising Standards Authority before the ruling was ultimately revoked. Twigs continues to challenge conventions and provoke thoughtful dialogue.

During her conversation with Vogue, Twigs unveils a new concept she has coined as “eusexia,” which describes an ecstatic connection akin to becoming completely one with a lover. This idea, inspired by her personal experiences, serves as the title for a song from her latest album, offering insight into her artistic depth and the personal stories that shape her creativity.

This edition of British Vogue not only commemorates a pivotal moment in the magazine’s history but also celebrates the dynamic spirit of British creativity as embodied by FKA Twigs, all while framed against the enchanting backdrop of London.
